Blackjack Unpacked

Master the basics of the world’s most popular table game. Learn how your decisions impact the house edge and discover the math behind every hit, stand, and split.

How to Play

The Goal?

Create a hand with a higher total than the dealer’s without going over 21.

  • The game begins when each player places their chips in the box on the table in front of them.
  • Every player is dealt two cards, while the dealer is dealt one exposed card and one face-down “hole” card. If a player has Blackjack, he or she is immediately paid out at either 3 to 2 or 6 to 5, unless the dealer also has Blackjack.
  • You can decide to stand, hit, double down or split. In some games you have the option to surrender.
  • The dealer will expose his or her hole card.
  • The dealer hits to 17. Some variations allow the dealer to hit a “soft 17” (a 17 in which one of the cards is an Ace valued at 11).
  • Once the dealer stands or busts, players with hands better than the dealer’s win and are paid out at 1 to 1.

What to Know

  • Beating the Dealer: The goal is to beat the dealer’s hand without going over 21. You are not competing against other players.
  • Winning Hands: You win if your hand is higher than the dealer’s or if the dealer “busts” (exceeds 21).
  • Table Limits: Minimum and maximum bets are posted at every table. Check these to ensure they fit your budget.
  • The Number of Decks: Games can use 1 to 8 decks. While more decks slightly increase the house advantage, the game remains a matter of chance.
  • Standard Payouts: A winning hand pays 1 to 1. A “Blackjack” (Ace and 10-value card) typically pays 3 to 2 or 6 to 5.
  • Check the Odds: 3 to 2 offers a better payout than 6 to 5. Check the table felt or signage for the specific rules of that game.
  • No Guarantees: Even making the statistically “correct” play doesn’t ensure a win. You cannot control which cards are dealt.
  • House Advantage: The rules of the game are designed to give the house a mathematical edge over time, regardless of the number of decks.

Terms of the Game

Learn the key terms and concepts you’ll encounter so you’re equipped with the right language before playing the game.

Blackjack

A two-card hand containing an Ace and a 10-value card, totaling 21.

Bust/Break

A hand totaling over 21, automatically resulting in a loss.

Soft Hand

A hand with an Ace that can be valued at either 1 or 11. With a soft hand, you cannot break or bust if you hit or take a card.

Hit or Draw

To be dealt another card.

Stand

To not be dealt another card.

Double Down

To double your original bet and commit to standing after taking only one more card.

Split

If you’re dealt two cards of the same value, you can split your original hand into two separate hands. This requires an additional, equal bet. No blackjack payouts occur in hands that have been split.

Surrender

If you don’t like your first two cards, you can surrender. The dealer takes half of your original bet and your hand is discarded. You can’t surrender when the dealer has Blackjack.

Insurance

If the dealer shows an Ace, players with Blackjack can take Even Money (paid 1 to 1). Others may take Insurance, a side bet up to half their wager. If the dealer has Blackjack, Insurance pays 2 to 1; if not, the Insurance bet loses and the hand proceeds.

Etiquette

  • Set a time limit. Blackjack sessions can last hours; setting a limit keeps you fresh and gives others a chance to play.
  • Hands off. Never touch your chips once the cards are in play.
  • Use hand signals. These ensure clarity for both the dealer and the security cameras:
    • Hit: Tap the table.
    • Stand: Wave your hand over your cards.
    • Double Down: Add a separate bet next to your original wager.
  • Speak up. Certain actions must be communicated verbally to the dealer:
    • Splits: When you want to play two identical cards as separate hands.
    • Surrender (if applicable): When you choose to fold your hand early to reclaim half of your bet.
